Close Up’s Program for New Americans is built on the belief that textbooks and lectures alone are not enough to help students understand responsible citizenship. Our experiential and interactive approach allows migrant and recently immigrated students to get involved and have a voice in issues important to them. After this 6-day/5-night program, students return home from the nation’s capital empowered and ready to make a difference in their community.
On Close Up, students have the opportunity to:
- Create personal connections to the people, places, and events that make this country so unique;
- Experience American history through our nation’s most significant documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights;
- Discuss the role of the executive branch and experience the thrill of a presidential campaign through a mock election; and
- Engage in discussions about the current issues they are most passionate about.
Participation in a Close Up program requires parent or guardian approval for any participants under 18 years of age.
