Discover your role in American democracy!

On Close Up’s 5-day/4-night New Americans Middle School Program, students meet with peers from schools nationwide to learn how government impacts their lives and how they can make a difference. Students gain the skills they need to become more involved in their communities back home. Guided by our highly-trained instructors, students have the opportunity to:

  • Discuss the historic events that have shaped our nation through visits to DC’s must-see sites;
  • Gain a personal connection to the people, places, and events that make this country so unique;
  • Explore American history through our nation’s most significant documents including the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights;
  • Launch into another stratosphere and explore the history and science of aviation and spaceflight at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum; and
  • Take on the role of a member of Congress to debate and vote on today’s most pressing issues in a Mock Congress workshop.

Participation in a Close Up program requires parent or guardian approval for any participants under 18 years of age.
